An agricultural firm has been fined £600,000 after a truck driver collecting from one of its sites was crushed by a collapsed mound of animal feed.

Malcolm Harrison, driver for Lancashire-based Reid Atkinson, was buried under a stockpile of soya meal when loading his vehicle at Cargill’s Seaforth Dock, Liverpool premises on 6 September 2012. Harrison, 64, later died from his injuries in hospital.

In a case bought by the Health and Safety Executive, Liverpool Crown Court heard that Cargill, of Fairmile Lane in Cobham, Surrey, failed to ensure the safety of non-employees.

It was charged with breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and fined £600,000. It was ordered to pay costs of £20,095.
