A Joint Development Agreement (JDA) between Ford Trucks and Iveco has been signed for the design and engineering of a new heavy-duty truck cab. A year ago, the companies signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which has developed into this operational project.
The latest agreement is a contractual framework for the development of a new truck cab and common sourcing as applicable. While this will be a joint project, both manufacturers will build the cab at their own factories. Some elements of the cab will be customised according to each manufacturer’s branding style and design.
The agreement signing ceremony was attended by Güven Özyurt, general manager of Ford Otosan; Emrah Duman, vice president of Ford Trucks (right); Olof Persson, CEO, Iveco Group; and Luca Sra, president, truck business unit, Iveco Group (left).
Duman said: “At Ford Trucks, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of engineering excellence. This joint development agreement is a testament to our capability to design and develop cutting-edge solutions that not only meet but exceed the industry’s evolving standards. By joining forces with Iveco, we are enhancing our ability to deliver innovative, high-performance cabins that will set new benchmarks in safety, aerodynamics, and driver comfort, all while ensuring cost efficiency and regulatory compliance.”
Sra added: “We are thrilled to take our partnership with Ford Trucks to the next level through this agreement. By sharing engineering expertise and combining our strengths, we will create a product that sets new standards in safety, efficiency, quality and driver comfort. This agreement is a strategic move that will allow both Iveco and Ford Trucks to remain at the forefront of the market, well-prepared to comply with new regulations and deliver exceptional quality and value to our customers.”
This collaborative approach is designed to improve Ford Trucks and Iveco’s competitiveness in Europe. The cabin will be compliant with the upcoming EU direct vision standard to enhance driver visibility. Other key aspects of the planned design include good aerodynamic performance to help fleets reduce fuel consumption and in turn carbon emissions. Inside, there will be a focus on comfort and the companies note modularity as a priority. Ford Trucks and Iveco will develop the cabin to be compatible with all powertrains.
The fruits of this joint agreement are due to materialise with production-ready cabs by 2028. Expected to include significant technological advancements the project also helps the two manufacturers to save on development costs to bring to market a new generation of energy efficient, comfortable cabs. Projected spend for the agreement is currently €343m.
Iveco will be exhibiting at Road Transport Expo 2025, which takes place at NAEC Stoneleigh between 24-26 June. It’s free to attend and registrations are now open.
