Biffa has added four new 8x4 Iveco X-Way trucks to its fleet of more than 3,000 vehicles. These bulk carriers were supplied by Guest Trucks and will be used for industrial waste management.

Taking waste to recycling plants and landfill can often involve unpaved surfaces in the final mile so the vehicles are specified as ‘OFF’ variants to cope with challenging terrain. This means the vehicles have an approach angle of more than 25 degrees and a steel bumper. The trucks have the ‘rocking mode’ which modifies clutch behaviour to improve traction in muddy or snowy conditions.

Darren Judd, Biffa head of fleet development, said: “As the leader in sustainable waste management, it was important to us to select a vehicle that could operate at the highest standard, but also has longevity as we want our vehicles to last as long as possible before replacement. We wanted to look at vehicle suitability and to really test the market and we feel we have found this with the Iveco X-Way.”

Boughton Engineering did the bodywork and fitted a hydraulic hook-loader system so the X-Ways can lift up to 16 tonnes. They will be put to work for as many as 18 hours per day with dual shifts, and they are expected to cover around 44,000 miles annually.

Patrick Farbrace, Iveco business line director – truck, said: “I’m pleased the Iveco X-Way has been considered by Biffa for its essential work. We are looking forward to seeing these highly capable trucks working hard on the Biffa fleet over the coming years.”

On top of the rugged specification, the eight-leggers are fitted with 4G connectivity to facilitate smart reporting. This can be used to analyse vehicle performance, track location data, remotely diagnose faults and anticipate maintenance requirements. With over the air updates the software will be automatically kept up to date without needing to visit the dealer.
