The Freightliner brand is to leave its Portland home, ending a 60 year relationship with the city.
The DaimlerChrysler-owned US OEM is to retrofit its Swan Island plant in order to manufacture military and Western Star-branded products. 800 jobs will be lost by April 2007.As the truck market prepares for a cyclical nosedive, Freightliner has also announced that it is to drop an entire shift - 1180 staff - at its Charlotte, NC plant, blaming reluctance on the part of operators to move ahead with EPA 07 compliant vehicles. In addition, 280 jobs will go at the nearby Gaston parts facility. In a previous announcement, the company had said that it would also lose 800 jobs at its Canadian facility at St Thomas, Ontario.A few weeks ago, Freightliner announced the development of a new Mexican facility. At the time, it denied any intention of moving manufacturing away from Portland, but confirmed US lay-offs of around 4000 this year.
