Fuel protests at Stanlow refinery

Around 100 farmers and hauliers demonstrated outside the Stanlow oil refinery over rising fuel prices last Thursday (1 May). Protesters gathered at the entrance of the plant at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, and by 11pm had blocked about 50 trucks from entering. Tom Haughton, one of the protesters, tells MT: "Protesters came from all over, particularly North Wales, mid-Wales, Cheshire and Lancashire.

"A wide range of people, including one-man operators and medium-sized businesses, turned up, all angry about what is going on." Houghton believes that protests about fuel will start to snowball. "The tactics may be different next time, but we will continue to keep up the pressure on the government," he adds. Police said the protest was peaceful and no arrests were made.

Meanwhile, production levels at the Grangemouth oil refinery had reached 30% as MT went to press, following the two-day strike last month. Full capacity is expected by 18 May. Further strikes seem unlikely as a proposal from the site's owner, Ineos, is currently being considered by union Unite.
