Fuel theft costs J Whitfield and Son £2,000

Approximately £600 of diesel was stolen from two of the Normacot, Stoke-based sand and gravel dealer's lorries at its Bengry Road site between 6pm on Thursday 20 November and 5am the following morning.

However partner David Whitfield says the firm has been left £2,000 out of pocket once the wages for jobs that could not be done are taken into account.

Whitfield claims: "That's our profits gone for a week. We are the industry that has been hit worst by the recession because we deliver to the construction industry." Anyone with any information is asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 4455.

Road signs to be reviewed after HGV hits house

Denbighshire Council is to review road signs on village lanes after a house was hit by an HGV for the 16th time in 18 years. The most recent collision occurred on 25 November, and since then Amanda Sandland - the owner of the house in Bodfari, near Denbigh - has called for signs to be put up nearby warning drivers to stay off narrow lanes. According to Sandland, signs need to be put up on the nearby A541 to prevent HGV drivers using the B5429 through the village.

RHA complains about A303 closure

Hauliers using the A303 look set for lengthy detours from February as the main truck route from the South-East to the South-West closes for 12 weeks. Major roadworks on the A303 near Mere in Wiltshire are due to start on 9 February and run for approximately 12 weeks. Crawford assets bought out

Twenty driver jobs have been saved in the North-East after the assets of Crawford Transport Services were bought by two former managers. Washington, Tyne and Wear-based Danwel, which traded as Crawford Transport Services, went into administration at the end of October. The company's assets were acquired soon after by sister firm Crawford Pallet Distribution, now headed by former general manager Stephen Howard and transport manager David Long.
