Daimler has given the Fuso eCanter its global launch at an event in New York.
The Fuso eCanter is the world’s first series-produced all-electric light-duty truck and made its first UK appearance at the Freight in the City Expo last year (booking for this year’s event at Alexandra Palace is now open).
Customers in the US, Europe and Japan will take delivery of the first of the electric Canters in the coming months, with a target of 500 units within the next two years.
Large scale production is intended to start in 2019.
The Fuso eCanter has a range of 100km (62.5 miles) and a load capacity up to three and a half tons – depending on body and usage.
The vehicle’s electric powertrain contains six high voltage lithium ion battery packs with 420v and 13.8 kWh each.
In comparison with a conventional diesel truck, Daimler claims it offers savings up to 1,000 euro per 10,000 kilometres on operating costs.
UPS will be the recipient of the first eCanters in the US.
It comes on the day Tesla revealed that its semi truck will be demonstrated on the road next month.
