Operators in north London, face longer journey times following Haringey Council's decision to implement an HGV ban.

The ban follows a consultation that began in April 2009, in a bid to avoid rat-running and to respond to residents' complaints of high volumes of trucks using the roads. In total, 85% of consultation respondents voted in favour of the ban.

The 7.5-tonne weight restriction will be implemented by the end of January and affects the following roads around the A406 North Circular Road: Dukes Avenue, Albert Road and Crescent Road.

Andy Ranger, director at local firm Wood Green Timber Company, says: "As a group operating in London, it seems every day there is another cost, so this 7.5-tonne HGV ban will force us to take longer routes and add another price to our business."

Haringey Council says the ban will be enforced by the police.
