Haulier in court on driving and overloading offences

A County Longford haulage company has been fined £900 for drivers’ hours and overloading offences.

In a prosecution brought by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA), Lisburn Magistrates’ Court was told that in August 2013, DVA officers were conducting a CV compliance check on the M1 at Sprucefield, County Down, when they stopped an HGV operated by Brendan O’Reilly.

O’Reilly, of Ballinalee, Ireland, was fined £650 for seven tachograph and drivers hours’-related offences. This included £300 for three offences of failing to take a statutory break and £350 for four offences of excess daily driving.

He was fined a further £250 for operating an overloaded vehicle that was detected travelling in excess of its maximum permissible gross train weight.

The court also ordered O’Reilly to pay an offender levy of £15 and court costs of £32.

Charges were brought under the Passenger and Goods Vehicle (Recording Equipment) Regulations (NI) 1996 and the Road Traffic (NI) Order 1981, as well as the Motor Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations (NI) 1999.
