An HE Payne driver had a lucky escape last week when he was forced off the road and narrowly avoided ending up on a railway line.
The accident happened at 6am last Wednesday near Tottenham Hale railway station in North London. It involved a black Rover car which collided with the Payne Volvo FH, whose driver fought to maintain control as his vehicle headed for a railway line. Instead it ended up in the River Lea which runs parallel to the road.
A large van was also involved in the incident. The van and LGV drivers were unhurt; the Rover driver was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be serious.
Spokesman David Payne says: "Our driver was badly shaken up, but it could have been so much worse. He has taken the week off and then has another week's holiday booked, so hopefully he will feel better when he returns.
"The truck has already been stripped down. It's not a write-off but it is in a sorry state. The trailer remarkably was unharmed and will be back on the road soon."
The Bedfordshire-based firm runs 45 trucks, specialising in food transport and reefer work.
The accident caused severe congestion during the rush hour but the police says no charges have been brought.
