Rental giant Hill Hire says the lack of Vosa staff available to man its designated premises is threatening its business. Hill Hire has invested £350,000 per site on seven designated premises built to Vosa test station standard, as this was considered the most efficient way of servicing the 22,000 vehicles and trailers that must be tested each year.
However, operations manager Adam Fairbotham says Vosa cannot supply enough testers to keep the sites open five days a week, so the company's service is usually reduced to two or three days.
The designated premises are in Glasgow, Bradford, Manchester, Avonmouth, Rainham and Birmingham. "We're struggling to get any dates at all in Birmingham," says Fairbotham. Each centre requires a single vehicle tester.
Fairbotham has raised the issues with local Vosa management but now feels compelled to take his concerns higher: "This is becoming quite a strain on our business. Vosa will have to do something about this situation soon or there will be trucks and trailers sitting all over with no MoTs.
We've tried to get tests at other stations but can't," he adds. "Having spent £350,000 on each site it's very frustrating not to be able to use them fully."
