Hauliers that regularly use the Humber Bridge near Hull are being told to expect delays for up to 40 weeks for essential structural maintenance.
The £3.9m project, which is expected to begin on 28 October, will see the closure of the nearside lane in both directions to reduce pressure on the structure and allow four steel 'A-frames', which support the bridge, to be replaced.
The Humber Bridge Board has urged operators to allow additional time for their journeys to account for delays, possibly until next summer, as a 30mph speed limit will also be in force.
Bridgemaster Peter Hill said three approach lanes and three toll booths will be open during peak times, whilst this will be reduced to one or two during night time and at weekends.
“We appreciate that customers will be worried that this work could affect traffic flow in and around the Humber Bridge toll area, but we want to stress that we are doing all we can to minimise any impact,” said Hill.
Earlier this year, the Humber Bridge Board revealed an 11% increase in the number of trucks using the crossing, after the toll for LGVs was cut from £20.30 to £12 in April 2012.
