Fruit and vegetable distributor Huntapac has strengthened its transport fleet with 16 tractor units.
The eight automatic SCR multi-axle Daf XF105s and eight EGR Scania 480s have been in operation since November and John Bell, Huntapac transport manager, says:
“At the moment the Dafs and Scanias are collectively returning 7.5mpg, but once they’ve been run in we fully expect fuel economy to increase to about 8.5 to 9mpg.”
Bell adds: “This is also the first time we’ve had automatics in our fleet. The automatic gearbox in the Dafs removes the effect that driving style can have on fuel consumption and it’s also helping to increase the safety of our drivers as they can concentrate solely on road positioning without having to consider gear changing.”
Huntapac’s tractors are expected to cover around 200,000km a year on various distribution routes for large retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainbury’s and Aldi.
The distribution firm has also installed an AdBlue tank on site for the eight Euro-5 Dafs and current usage is said to be around 1,000 litres per month.
