Imperial Holdings, the South African parent company of UK dealer group Imperial Commercials, has bought Mercedes-Benz dealer Orwell Truck & Van for an undisclosed sum.

The deal for the Norfolk and Suffolk dealership includes the four sites at Colchester, Ipswich, Newmarket and Norwich, and a 190-strong workforce.

With 28 existing sites, more than 1,000 employees and franchise agreements with Daf Trucks, MAN, Isuzu Truck (UK), Volkswagen, Ford, Nissan and Fiat, Imperial Commercial is already the biggest UK commercial vehicle dealer network.

Ian Oakes, MD at Imperial, said Orwell Truck & Van, which will retain its name and operate independently from Imperial Commercials, is a well respected, long standing Mercedes-Benz Dealer partner with a very strong regional reputation.

Orwell Truck & Van was founded by David Grant in 1991, who will remain as MD. He said: “Orwell Truck & Van is a natural fit with Imperial’s existing UK business. It has an excellent record of investing in the commercial vehicle sector and will bring great expertise both to our company and the wider franchise.

“Under the new owners, the business will continue to be called and operate as Orwell Truck & Van, so it’s ‘business as usual’ from the point of view of both customers and staff alike,” he added.
