Allied Bakeries has taken delivery of 93 Iveco Eurocargo rigids as part of its 10-year vehicle replacement programme.

The new trucks come with automatic gearboxes and Euro-5 engines as standard, and they form part of Allied's 1000-vehicle mixed fleet.

Christopher Davies, fleet engineer at Allied Bakeries, says: "We were in the market to replace our older distribution vehicles at 7.5, 14 and 18-tonnes so we took the decision to trial Iveco Eurocargos and DAF LFs. Both trucks performed well, but only the Eurocargo was available with an automated gearbox and a Euro-5 engine as standard."

Since the Eurocargos meet the Euro-5 emissions standards, all 93 new trucks qualify for the Reduced Pollution Certificate, meaning Allied saves around £2,785 per year on the new fleet, or £27,850 over their projected 10-year lifespan.

The firm's decision to switch to automatic gearboxes for its medium-weight trucks follows similar trials Allied conducted on its current crop of tractor units, which returned "at least 0.5mpg" improvement on fuel economy.

Davies says: "The great advantage of an automated transmission is that you can't over-rev the engine, so the truck is always in the right gear. It also prolongs clutch life and offers enhanced comfort and safety for our drivers, since routine traffic congestion means stop/start driving is commonplace."
