January launch for Hyundai's 115hp iLoad

Hyundai is set to return to the UK light CV market with the launch of the iLoad in January. Full details have not yet been revealed, but it has rear wheels driven by a 115hp/343Nm 2.5-litre common-rail diesel engine, with a high level of standard equipment and a long warranty promised.

It appears to be the same van as sold across the Channel as the H300, which has a GVW of 3,120kg in panel van form.

Health and safety laws get tougher

Operators found guilty of flouting health and safety legislation will face an increase of up to £15,000 in fines and are more likely to receive a prison sentence under new rules which come into force next year. Daf consults union over 250 proposed job cuts

Truck manufacturer Daf is blaming falling orders for the decision to potentially cut 250 staff from its Leyland, Lancs assembly plant. The firm is now consulting with unions over the proposals, which would take effect from February 2009. It follows Daf's decision at the end of October to axe the factory's night shift - originally taken on to combat long lead times - although it had hoped that redundancies would be confined to temporary staff. Manchester congestion charge for HGVs

The proposal to charge HGVs the same as cars to enter the Manchester congestion-charge zone has been met with derision in the industry. Hauliers based in the area say the levy is simply another tax on an already struggling sector and it will make no difference to the number to trucks in Greater Manchester.
