John Truswell and Sons (Garage) has blamed "appalling trade conditions" for posting a loss in its latest set of accounts.

The Barnsley, South Yorkshire haulier made a pre-tax loss of £150,689 for the year ended 30 June 2010, compared with a pre-tax profit of £32,212 in 2009.

Turnover dropped 1% to £9.6m from £9.7m in the previous 12-month period.

A statement from the firm says: "The directors, though disappointed that the company made a loss for the first time for many years, are satisfied with the overall financial position of the company.

"The appalling trade conditions experienced during the early part of the year, having now receded somewhat, mean that the directors look forward to a return to healthy profitability."
