The Lenham group of companies, the Kent-based transport and warehousing operation, has unveiled a robust set of results for the year to 31 August 2009, which saw both turnover and pre-tax profit up.

Lenham - which has three businesses in the group: hauliers Lenham Storage and Lenham Storage (Southern); and repair firm Lenham Garages - saw turnover rise to £25.5m from £24.6m the previous year. Pre-tax profit was £295,762, up 17.5% from £251,627.

The Lenham Storage directors' report says: "The company has responded to the challenges of the recession by reducing its costs and amending its operational overheads to reflect market conditions. The company believes it will emerge from the recession stronger and in a better condition to take advantage of any opportunities that may present themselves, whether through organic growth or by sensibly priced contract gains."

It says that it has embarked on a project with one of its customers to refurbish several of its older warehouses.

The statement adds: "The company believes that money invested in its existing facilities represents opportunities for the future, not only in maintaining the business's existing client base but also in tendering for and securing new wins."

Lenham has also targeted accident reduction as a key priority: cutting all accidents by 32% and reportable accidents by 36%. "The company aims to continue building on this success," it adds.

Andover-based Lenham Storage (Southern) had a tougher year: turnover fell 4%, and it had to swallow a £41,293 bad debt. However, it says that cost cutting has enabled it to remain competitive.
