Limehillock Quarries has invested in its first 170-tonne Volvo FH16-750 8x4 tractor unit from Volvo Truck & Bus Centre North & Scotland, to move its mobile crushers and screening plant between its seven sites across the north of Scotland.
The unit is equipped with a Globetrotter XL Cab, twin bunks and a drive 16++ package due to it being double-manned on a regular basis. Other features include a Jost sliding fifth wheel and an SB Components comprehensive rear cab module including a split fuel and hydraulic tank.
External additions include light bars and Dura-Bright alloy wheels, while Volvo’s Post Office Red paintwork is finished off with a newly designed company livery.
Richard Murray, owner of Limehillock Quarries, said: “The new FH represents a substantial investment for our company. When considering a new heavy haulage truck, we first put out our requirements to every commercial vehicle manufacturer and requested that we have a demonstration vehicle, as you cannot buy this type of truck from specification sheets alone.”
When looking for a new vehicle, Murray originally consulted DAF which offered a manual XF that, he felt, “did not have the power output needed to move the weights involved”.
Since being delivered, the Volvo’s Dynamic Steering is “already ticking all the boxes for our driver and he’s also very impressed with the I-Shift Crawler gearbox’s capabilities, particularly when pulling away loaded on an uphill slope. The truck is easy to drive and there’s no strain on the arms or upper body”.
Murray concluded: “All pointers turned to Volvo for this operator, although to be honest, Volvo was always our preferred option as a long-term investment and the marque’s strong residual factors also provide reassurance.”
The FH16-750 will pull Limehillock Quarries’ tipper and step frame trailers as well as the larger Nooteboom low loader. One FH-500 6x2 tag axle tractor unit was also delivered around the same time as the FH16, and will be added to the 20-strong fleet of three axle units to haul tipper, flat, curtainside and tank trailers.
