A lorry driver who displayed “unbelievable recklessness and ignorance” after he lost control of his Scania with drugs in his system and ploughed into a car has been jailed.
Anthony Campbell was handed a two year prison sentence at Peterborough Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
His truck swerved into the path of a Mercedes on the A47 at Guyhirn in January.
The car driver suffered minor injuries, while the passenger, a 38-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and had to undergo surgery.
Campbell, 55, was uninjured but failed a drugs test and was subsequently arrested.
A blood sample showed his cannabis level was 3.7mcg per litre of blood. The legal limit is two.
In a victim personal statement, the passenger said: “When I was trapped in the car at the scene of the crash, I thought I was going to die.
“I can’t believe that someone would be so stupid as to drive a 44 tonne lorry with drugs in their system. The whole incident has left me sad, upset and angry. What he did that day could have easily killed us.”
PC Boris Kahn, from Cambridgeshire’s serious collision investigation unit, said it was miraculous the motorists survived: “Campbell displayed unbelievable recklessness and ignorance in getting behind the wheel after smoking cannabis,” he said.
