Maritime Transport has bought its first Next Generation Scanias as part of a 105-vehicle order from the manufacturer.

The operator bought five of the latest models - three R450s and two S500s- to put their efficiency, sustainability and driver comfort to the test.

Maritime fleet director Stuart Wardlaw said the five trucks had been integrated at several depots.

"Each of our driver trainers, for those locations, has received specialist training on the new vehicle to ensure we maximise their potential while they’re on fleet," he said.

One of the trainers, Steve Smith, said: "Driving a mixture of motorways, dual carriageways, single carriageways and side roads, the first thing I noticed was how quiet the engine is. It still has the Scania trademark low-revving, high-torque engine but there was little wind noise while driving on motorways.

"I found the Scania R450 to be a lovely drive that ticks a lot of the boxes.”

The remaining 100 vehicles in the order are R-series trucks with Highline cabs, the last of which will be delivered in October.
