Boris Johnson plans to scrap the western extension of Central London's congestion zone.

The Mayor of London is starting legal procedures to remove the £8-a-day charge for most of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea in the west of the capital from the spring of 2010.

This follows a five-week informal public consultation in which 67% of individual respondents and 86% of businesses stated they supported the removal of the western zone, launched in February 2007.

The consultation attracted nearly 28,000 responses.

A draft revision to the mayor's transport strategy reflecting his intention to remove the extension will be the subject of a 12-week statutory public consultation next summer.

Transport for London (TfL) will also need to carry out a separate formal consultation.

Jo Tanner, director of communications at the Freight Transport Association, adds: "Obviously this is a relief for businesses operating in London, although taken against last week's fuel duty bombshell the additional cost would have been a drop in the ocean."
