Two men have received suspended prison sentences and have been disqualified from driving after they were caught driving a truck in the wrong direction on the M6 Toll road last month.

Police were alerted to a report of an overseas-registered HGV travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway at about 7.50pm on 12 July. It had allegedly been speeding and performing U-turns on the carriageway.

The truck was stopped by officers from the Central Motorway Police Group (CPMG) near junction T4 at Weeford, near Shenstone in Staffordshire. The two men inside the vehicle were arrested and charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously.

Both men appeared at Stafford Crown Court on 3 August.

Romanian national Nicusor Paun, 34, received eight months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and was disqualified from driving for two years.

Vasile Radoescu, 39, also from Romania, was sentenced to four months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Chief inspector Jed White said: “On this occasion these two individuals were clearly putting lives at risk, including their own.

“The sentences imposed by the court are to be welcomed. We will continue to work closely with our police colleagues across the Midlands region, and Midland Expressway, which runs the M6 Toll, to keep the motorway network as safe as possible.”
