Mercedes-Benz has launched a new engine family to meet Euro-5 emissions standards. The all-new OM651 is available in three ratings - in vehicles designated (in the case of 3.5-tonners) 310, 313 and 313CDI.

The 2,143cc long-stroke engines produce approximately 10% more power and torque than comparable predecessors, but with improved emissions and better fuel economy.

They feature twin Lanchester balancer shafts, higher-pressure common-rail injection and, in the two higher ratings, twin sequential turbochargers. Emission control is by a modified EGR system together with a close-mounted oxidising catalyst and diesel particulate filter combined in one unit.

A new six-speed manual transmission and an improved version of the OM642 2,987cc V6 with 440Nm complete the line-up. The new drivelines will be standard on all Sprinters from July production.
