Mercedes' Euro 4 Axor eight-wheeler is substantially lighter than its Euro 3 counterpart, with a chassis-cab weight of just 9,150kg, thanks to an axle and transmission change.
But UK truck marketing manager Nick Blake says that in the coming months it is hoped to get the 8x4's weight down further, to a bare nine tonnes, by emulating the simpler front bogie suspension layout of nearly all the Axor's competitors.
That will involve eliminating the elaborate load-compensating balance beams linking the first and second axle springs - which are not required under Construction and Use Regulations.
