The police and VOSA uncovered dozens of defects during a crackdown on unroadworthy HGVs on the A34.

As part of the police-led Operation Mermaid, 50 vehicles were checked yesterday (11 December) on the A34 north of Winchester and 39 defects were found.

Hampshire Police and VOSA found faults including overloaded vehicles and drivers failing to get enough rest.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick, who attended the operation, says: "Operation Mermaid is a great example of how VOSA and the police are working together to combat illegal and unsafe HGVs."
