CW Russell has purchased three new Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3240K tippers, meaning the German marque now accounts for almost half of the trucks on its 42-strong fleet.

The latest additions, which were supplied by Bell Truck and Van, are all 8x4s with Boweld tipping bodies and Edbro front-end rams. Their 10.7-litre engines are rated at 455hp.

Whereas previous Arocs on the fleet have been specified with day cabs, this time the Middlesbrough-based operator which specialises in construction, muck-away haulage and plant hire, opted for ClassicSpace L sleeper cabs. With more internal space, there’s room for underbunk fridge drawers. While many of CW Russell's 8-wheelers are primarily deployed for local day-work, the company is increasingly expanding its operations into Scotland, which explains the inclusion of sleeper cabs and fridges in its latest tipper specifications.

"Not too long ago, our fleet was dominated by trucks from another manufacturer,” explained director Tom Russell, who is the son of company founder and MD Charlie Russell. “However, we gradually became dissatisfied with their performance, prompting us to explore alternatives. We tested several options, but none could match the durability and reliability we were seeking.

"Two years ago, we acquired our first Arocs tipper from Bell Truck and Van, and it was a revelation. The Arocs is built to an exceptionally high standard and, importantly, is purpose-designed for our line of work. Its elevated ground clearance and suspension make it a highly capable off-road performer."

The new tippers, which are covered by Mercedes-Benz ExtendPlus five-year warranties, will soon be joined by four additional Arocs eight-wheelers and a trio of Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units, again all sourced from Bell Truck and Van.

  • Mercedes-Benz and Boweld will be exhibiting at this year’s Road Transport Expo, which takes place at Stoneleigh NAEC on June 28-30. It’s FREE to attend, and registrations are now open.
