A major factor in the purchasing decision was the employment of EGR technology, to avoid the need to use AdBlue.
David Bell, MJ general manager, says: "We purposely avoided SCR technology (and AdBlue) to keep vehicle operational requirements to a minimum for the drivers.
"We feel that having to use AdBlue is a major operational consideration, particularly for fleets the size of ours, and especially as we are primarily a tipper operation where chassis space is at a premium."
Bell also praises the MAN's automatic gearbox, which has greatly reduced clutch wear.
"We're very pleased with the performance of the Tipmatic gearbox, which works particularly well in off-road mode.
"It's far more responsive than the earlier versions; we've yet to replace a clutch on an example that's done 175,000km."
The new vehicles are recording between 6.5mpg and 7.5mpg, although the work is "very varied and in most cases pretty challenging".
The business has seen a healthy period in its waste management operation; however, the tipper side has slowed down a little recently.
