RoadTransport.com is a new website from the publishers of Motor Transport which features the latest news from the crack editorial teams of both MT and its sister title Commercial Motor, as well as an archive of past news stories and exclusive features. But point your web browser to roadtransport.com and you'll find much more than just this. If you need to find out about road transport law, for example, are looking for some basic information about a vehicle you're thinking of buying, are looking for actual vehicles for sale or are simply looking for a new job, roadtransport.com has it all at the click of a button. And then there are the blogs - a series of online web-logs with pithy observations on the news and events of the day along with random musings and links to the most interesting sites.

In the news

The news section of the site is divided into four parts: industry news, including the stories that matter to the whole industry operator news, including deals, mergers and financial results product news, with the latest developments in vehicles and equipment and legal news, such as new legislation, the traffic commissioners' decisions and court cases. This section will be updated every day with stories from Commercial Motor and Motor Transport as well as exclusives from roadtransport.com. There is a 'search' box to find precisely the story you're looking for and each story also displays a list of links to related stories.

Stay legal

Our Road Legal area provides an exhaustive guide to all the legislation you need to be aware of and is sub-divided into two main areas: Know the Law and Law on the Way. Know the Law is a structured group of articles - 46 at the moment - which are intended to provide an introduction to specific areas of the law. All the features are bang up to date and have been written either by practising lawyers or by experienced transport journalists. The basic subjects are:

  • O-licence law.
  • Drivers' hours, tachographs and the Working Time Directive.
  • Vehicle law
  • Roadside law.
  • Health & safety.
  • Employment law.
  • Environmental law.

Each subject is broken down into a series of articles - for example, Drivers' Hours, tachographs and the Working Time Directive is made up of these seven pieces:

  • Working Time Directive (WTD/RTD) explained.
  • EU drivers' hours law explained.
  • Digital tachographs.
  • Compliance and record-keeping.
  • Records required in the cab.
  • Offences and infringements.
  • Defences and exemptions.

All the information is presented in an easy-to-read question-and-answer style and if you want to know more, we are putting in plenty of links. For instance, you can go straight to the appropriate VOSA forms. Or if you want to read the fine print of the law, you can go straight to the source material, such as Department for Transport documents and the primary legislation. There is also a list of links to related news stories, so you can see how the law shapes up in practice. And we also have a link to our dedicated blog on road transport law, where you can see what the latest legal issues are. The other main section of Road Legal, Law on the Way, consists of a series of thumbnail descriptions of the laws that are coming up in road transport. Again, we have links to the source material - Acts of Parliament and consultation documents, for instance - and to further reading. Also included is an email link for legal questions.

Find a job

If you are looking for a new job in the transport industry, roadtransport.com is certainly the place to start. The site will feature hundreds of transport jobs from all over the country. You can search for a position, specifying the type of job, the area of the country in which you would like to work, the salary range you expect, and whether you are looking for a permanent or contract position. You can look at the site as often as you like, or you may prefer to sign up for an e-mail alert - this way, whenever a job comes up that fits your criteria you will receive a message telling you about it, together with a link to take you directly to the job advert on the site. Finally, you can also let potential recruiters know about your skills and experience by posting your CV on the site.

Web logs

On top of all this, there are the online web logs (blogs). With contributions from most of the journalists on Motor Transport and Commercial Motor, these will include reports direct from launches and shows, first impressions of events, reactions to breaking news stories and more.  The centrepiece of the blogs area is Today in Road Transport, a daily entry which rounds up the latest news stories from roadtransport.com. It also has its own specialist blogs covering different areas of the industry, which include:

Why wait? All of the features of the roadtransport.com site are available absolutely free with no need to register or provide any personal details to see any information. Better still, all visitors need to take advantage of this wealth of free information and advice is a computer with internet access.
