A prominent truck rental and sales business has spent more than £1m restructuring and investing in its business following sustained organic growth in the past year.
MV Commercial, whose head office is in Livingston, has separated its hire and sales business as well as dividing its workshop and paintshop. It now has three sites on the Houstoun Industrial Estate.
The fleet has been increased to more than 750 vehicles to keep pace with demand for both its new-build crane-mounted trucks and more general fleet vehicles.
“In the past 12 months we have ordered 180 vehicles,” said director Steve Cairns, “and since 2010 we have seen 50% growth in the rental fleet.”
The sales office remains at the company’s original site on Muir Road and will continue to handle new-build enquiries and sales of ex-fleet vehicles. The new 4.5-acre rental operation is next door on Letham Road and incorporates a brand new paintshop and shot-blasting bay. There is a dedicated workshop on Naysmith Square.
“Having a paintshop and shot-blast facility – we moved the paintshop from where it was at the workshop to free up space there – is pretty unique in this area,” said Cairns. “Previously we sub-contracted that out to a company 20 miles away and it caused time delays,” he added.
The decision to split up the various business elements has allowed each division to concentrate on their specific tasks without “the cross-contamination of everyone being under one roof”, said Cairns. “We have been able to maximise our potential, for example we have 92% utilisation of the rental fleet.”
