Tony O’Mahony Agri Plant Hire & Haulage has added a new Volvo FH16 750 6x2 tractor unit, plated up to 80-tonne, to its fleet. Supplied by Gerard Sheehan, sales executive at McCarthy Commercials, Tony O’Mahony has been running Volvo trucks for close to 20 years. In total, 13 of the company’s 14 trucks are Volvos, with the new tractor replacing a 2016 FH16.

Diarmuid O’Mahony, transport manager at Tony O’Mahony Agri Plant Hire & Haulage said: “We’ve been buying Volvos for two decades now, and we’re consistently impressed with the product quality, dealer support and driving performance. I honestly couldn’t see myself buying anything else at this point. We’ve already placed an order for two new Volvo mid-lifts for next year, as we continue to grow our fleet to meet the demands of our varied business. Given our workload, having a truck that can meet all our needs is invaluable. From heavy haulage with low loaders, to transporting tankers and tippers, and supporting our agricultural work, the FH16 handles it all with ease.”

The FH16 offers 750hp and peak torque of 3,550Nm to cope with the heaviest loads. An automated 12-speed I-Shift gearbox picks the right gear for the situation and crawler gears help to reduce clutch wear when pulling away with a full load. Tony O’Mahony opted for Volvo’s Dynamic Steering system which reduces the input needed from the driver by up to 85%. The system works by using hydraulic power and an electric motor fitted to the steering gear.

O’Mahony said: "We first experienced Volvo’s dynamic steering in 2021, and it’s been a game-changer. The precision and ease it brings to handling make long days on the road far less tiring. We’ve been so impressed that it was a no-brainer to include it on our new FH16 750, and we’ve also specified it on two new Volvos due to arrive with us in 2025.”

Additional equipment includes Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels and a Globetrotter XL cab kitted out with a fridge, microwave, smart TV, leather upholstery and full air suspension. The new truck will work up to seven days a week and cover around 100,000km annually.
