The Iveco Group company FPT Industrial launched two new powertrain solutions at IAA Transportation. The third largest industrial powertrain company in the world produces low-environmental impact solutions for on-road and industrial applications. Its products include ePropulsion systems, battery packs, and battery management systems and engines.

FPT Industrial creates alternative fuel solutions for light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles that use hydrogen, hythane, natural gas, diesel, and renewable fuels. Its new CURSOR 9 H2 engine is a hydrogen solution designed for urban and regional heavy trucks, heavy construction vehicles, and urban and intercity buses. The engine can be used and serviced like a standard ICE unit which makes installation and maintenance straightforward. The CURSOR 9 H2 can deliver up to 310hp and maximum torque of 1400Nm at 1100rpm.

While fuel cell solutions also use hydrogen, using an engine with this fuel is less complex, offers lower total cost of ownership and higher payloads. These factors are likely to make hydrogen engines a more attractive environmental and financial proposition for fleets.

FPT Industrial also unveiled its new N67 Hythane engine. Hythane is a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas. The N67 Hythane used a natural gas engine as a base to create a prototype which offers an estimated 50% reduction of CO2 emissions compared to natural gas. The solution can be retrofitted to existing natural gas vehicles and doesn’t affect the aftertreatment system layout. It can provide up to 280hp and maximum torque of 1000Nm.

Sylvain Blaise, president of Iveco Group’s powertrain business unit said: “FPT Industrial has a key role in decarbonization and achieving global targets, with a clear vision in mind. We are working on the sustainability of the entire line-up, strengthening our position as a world-leading manufacturer of low environmental-impact powertrain solutions. In our vision, ICE technologies continue to have a relevant role, using multiple sustainable energy carriers to achieve major results in terms of decarbonization, while we also position ourselves as an electrification solutions supplier with our complete range of ePowertrain solutions.”
