Scania has finally dropped the clutch pedal from its Opticruise transmission, or is at least offering buyers a choice. The truck manufacturer has always insisted that three pedals are safer than two, but now it is letting its customers decide for themselves.
The new transmission was one of several improvements announced today in Sweden at the launch of the new R-Series.
The most obvious external difference is a new grille (with more horizontal bars), which the manufacturer describes as 'more dynamic'. The revised shape is said to improve airflow and provide better engine cooling. The side of the cab has been changed slightly too, and the truck features a new front bumper. Redesigned side-skirts do their bit to improve fuel consumption by a claimed 0.6%.
The interior has had something of a makeover as well, with a restyled dashboard, better storage facilities, new curtains and a soft-touch dashboard incorporating a large tray and anti-slip mat.
The options list has been extended, and buyers can now choose a new bed. It features a thick 155mm pocket-spring mattress, and is width-adjustable (from 730mm to 900mm).
The number of 'creature comforts' and safety features on the options list have increased significantly.
