Newell & Wright Group is delighted with the 10mpg-plus fuel consumption of its two new Volvo FH 6x2 tractor units.
The new trucks, which were supplied by Luke Cook, area sales manager at Crossroads Truck and Bus, have been specified with I-Save and Volvo’s 460hp Euro-6(e) turbo compound engines.
“Reducing environmental impact is our top priority and we have now placed clear targets to push for double figures in regard to the fuel consumption of our trucks,” explained Stephen Newell, operations director, Newell & Wright Group. “For older models from other manufacturers, those sorts of numbers are nothing more than a pipe dream. That’s not the case with these Volvos though. With the combined technology of the trucks and the superb driver training we received, in no time at all both of our new models were comfortably hitting that double figure target.”
As part of the I-Save package, the trucks are equipped with Volvo’s predictive cruise control system, I-See, and I-Cruise with I-Roll. Driver comfort is taken care of with the Drive++ package, which adds leather upholstery and dual armrests. Other creature comforts inside the Globetrotter cab include a 33-litre fridge freezer, DAB radio and satellite navigation.
Although the Sheffield-based haulier previously ran a fleet exclusively of Volvo trucks, these are the first examples it has taken delivery of since 2013.
“Since returning to Volvo we’ve been very impressed by the product quality and innovation on offer,” said Newell. “We like to keep our fingers firmly on the pulse when it comes to the latest vehicle technology and, as far as we can see, Volvo’s I-Save package is not just second to none but technologically unique. We’d certainly be interested in trying its zero emissions technology in the future too.”
The trucks are expected to cover over 1 million km during the seven years they will remain on the 100-strong fleet.
