Nightline is to launch a network of self-service parcel terminals across Ireland, to capitalise on the increase in B2C parcels generated by a surge in e-commerce.

The Irish delivery firm has developed the Parcel Motel service in partnership with Polish company InPost, which says the success of the locker box concept has proved a key driver in its own business expansion across Poland.

John Tuohy, Nightline chief executive, believes the new service will help to boost internet retail in Ireland, as the convenience of the terminals for consumers will remove traditional delivery barriers, such as waiting at home for a parcel.

He says: "It means customers not having to wait around to receive packages or having to reschedule their day to pop to a local post office. They will be able to collect purchases from secure units when they want.”

Customers will receive a unique PIN number via a text message, which will enable them to access their goods from the lockers. A receipt is then automatically sent to the retailer to confirm collection.

Nightline is planning to launch 100 Parcel Motels across Dublin in the first stage of the roll-out, with 400 national terminals in place by 2014.
