The Dutch trailer manufacturer, Nooteboom, has introduced a new trailer designed for moving wind turbine components. The mega windmill trailer XXL (MWT-XXL) has improved adjustability compared to previous MWT generations to carry larger tower sections. Nooteboom has delivered the first MWT-XXL to the Polish haulier Transannaberg.

The new trailer is the third generation of Nooteboom’s MWT. Each generation has been modified to accommodate larger wind turbine components. MWT-XXL has a load capacity of approximately 100 tonnes and when the trailer is empty it’s below 4m tall. The new trailer model can move tower sections with an inner diameter of approximately 2850mm to 6100mm without adjustments to the mounting frame. Previously, the MWT-XL trailer could transport tower segments with an inner diameter up to 5700mm. MWT-XXL features a double hydraulically height-adjustable A-frame. To simplify and streamline loading and unloading, the load is clamped in three places to secure it for transport.

One of the many challenges of larger wind turbine components is a higher centre of gravity. Nooteboom conducted a series of stability tests at the RDW test track in Lelystad to determine the best suspension system to use. The team evaluated the differences between air and hydraulic suspension systems and concluded air suspension was the most suitable solution.

Stability testing found a self-steered dolly with air suspension was at least as stable as a comparable trailer with hydraulic suspension and pendulum axles. Despite the similarity in performance, the team found the driver could visibly detect lean and slow down accordingly, something they would not be able to visually identify in time with the hydraulic system.

New for this generation are adjustable hooks to clamp tower sections. This facilitates safely securing tower sections with flanges that are thicker, thinner, or significantly different in shape without additional tools. Transannaberg has started using these adjustable hooks in practice on its wind turbine movements.
