The CV Operator Show will be the first time in two years that the whole transport industry has come together to showcase the latest innovations in vehicle technology. But it will also be a great networking event, giving operators chance to meet up with suppliers old and new.

To introduce some of the key people who will be running stands at the show, we are asking them to take part in an informal One Minute Interview.

If you would like to take the One Minute Interview challenge please email steve.hobson@rbi.co.uk.

Darren Payne

Fleet and Commercial Vehicle Operations Director
Renault UK

What are you most looking forward to seeing at the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show?

Unsurprisingly, on a personal level, the buzz on the Renault stand created by the UK debuts of new Master and new Kangoo Van Maxi. From a professional perspective, it will be pleasing to see so many familiar faces again back at the NEC after the show’s absence last year.

What do you think visitors are going to be looking for at the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show?

With a bit of luck, the Renault stand to see the new Master in the metal. Otherwise, undoubtedly the focus will be very much on other new products, the latest innovations and cost saving measures in the current economic climate.

Why do think it is important to have a presence at the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show?

It is clearly the key industry show this year and most of the major players will be there. For us, it’s an ideal platform to launch our new Master and Kangoo Van Maxi ranges, and as the number one-selling van range in Europe we have decided to take one of the biggest stands at the show to really highlight the breadth of our product range.

What do you hope to gain from the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show?

It will be a perfect opportunity for us to glean initial feedback on our latest models from current and potential customers, converters, the media and colleagues from the industry.

What single piece of legislation would make your life easier and help your company work?

The availability of the same £5,000 electric vehicle subsidy for cars which was announced in the Budget, starting in 2011, to apply to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, in the same way that it currently does with the scrappage scheme.

How did you get into the industry?

My father worked for the market leader in trucks. We are both interested in cars and I always wanted to work in the industry. I didn’t get my break until I applied for a marketing manager position which was advertised in Marketing Week magazine.

How do you see the industry in the next five years?

I believe the industry will become increasingly focused on driving down emissions, improving fuel economy and developing alternative powertrains, as well as the continual drive to optimise cost-effective fleet operations. At Renault, we will be at the forefront of the EV revolution with the first vehicles launching next year.

What motivates you?

I can honestly say that I am highly self-motivated.

What has been your most rewarding professional achievement to date?

Being given the opportunity to reshape the fleet strategy of Renault UK.

What makes you proud to be part of the road transport industry?

I love cars (and vans!).

Pundits say the road transport industry delivers the economy?  Do you agree, and why?

Absolutely. It’s a vital cog for UK businesses. Without it, it’s inconceivable that goods would be as readily available to consumers and businesses alike as they usually are now.

Can you imagine a world without vans, trucks and trailers?

In a word, no. Individually, we’re a nation of car lovers. Commercially, they’re as essential as your laptop or mobile phone.
