Pallet network Palletline has repeated its call for other networks to lower the maximum weight of pallets they will accept for tail-lift operations after its rivals offered up only muted support for its initiative.
Palletline confirmed in February that it would be reducing maximum pallet weight for tail-lift operations from 1,000kg to 750kg from October to help protect the safety of its drivers. But so far, not one of the other seven major networks has committed to following its lead (CM 12 March).
“Networks risk being left behind as we act decisively – and as yet exclusively – to improve health and safety for drivers,”
said Palletline MD Graham Leitch.
“Not only has the reaction from our members and customers been positive, we have since received membership enquiries from well-respected hauliers who have stated that the tail-lift decision drove them to get in touch.
“With this insight into the desires of hauliers in mind, I would again urge all other networks to take action and introduce the measure sooner rather than later,” he added.
While a number of rival networks are sympathetic to the principle they have so far proved resistant for various reasons. While Nigel Parkes, MD of rival network Pallet-Track, has welcomed the concept he has argued that the only way to ensure a level playing field for all is the introduction of legislation.
