A4 truck parking ban

HGV drivers are being stopped from parking on a section of the A4 in Slough after complaints from residents that it had been turned into a "filthy truckstop".

Temporary bollards acting as road blocks will be removed from the Colnbrook bypass, and replaced with a kerb and large plant tubs.

The announcement by Slough Borough Council came as the RHA said that the current standard of facilities for lorry drivers at official areas was so inadequate that parking in a layby was “a preferable option”.

A council spokesman told CM that HGV drivers had used the site as an “unofficial truck stop” in the past and there had been complaints about dangerous parking and using the bushes as toilets.

The spokesman added: “We don’t know of any official truck stops in our borough, actually. There are laybys with bins in, though”.

Richard Burnett, RHA chief executive, said it welcomed the government’s plan to set up design panels of architects and experts to look at the quality of motorway service areas.

He added: “This must also include secure parking and facilities for HGV drivers. We will be pleased to work with them to bring about the change that is so desperately needed.”

Ashford Borough Council recently said it would start clamping non-UK-registered lorries parked illegally as part of efforts to keep traffic moving.
