PD Ports has won a 10-year contract to handle all of Taylors of Harrogate's tea and coffee imports after a pilot port-centric logistics strategy proved successful.

The deal means a complete overhaul of the Yorkshire beverage specialist's distribution chain. Previously, the bulk of its imports arrived via Felixstowe, with a smaller percentage coming through Tilbury port.

However, it says allowing Teesport to handle 100% of its tea and coffee distribution will reduce CO2 emissions and congestion, resulting in 100,000 fewer road miles per year.

A Taylors spokeswoman explains that a "dedicated PD team" will deal with the containers and then store goods in upgraded 60,000ft2 warehouses.

She adds: "We agreed on the long-term deal to cover the significant outlay on equipment required and to give all parties the stability to further enhance the set up as Taylors' business grows alongside the ambitious plans for Teesport."
