PF Whitehead Transport Services is hailing a "successful" year as it returns to profit. Pre-tax profit stood at £26,109 for the year ended July 31 2006, compared with a pre-tax loss of £106,386 in 2005. Operating profit was £49,490 in 2006, up from a loss of £100,185 in 2005.

The directors hailed an increase in turnover "following the first full year of a major contract coupled with additional work from new contracts", but no figures were given as part of the abbreviated accounts. The directors' report adds: "Following the year end, two of our main haulage contracts were successfully renewed and we have secured additional storage contracts and are therefore in a good position going forward."

Average monthly staff numbers were 116 in 2006, up from 110 in 2005. Employment costs were £3.3m in 2006, up from £2.1m in 2005. The company did not wish to give further comment to MT on the figures.
