Computer installation specialist Paul Ponsonby spent £40,000 on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for delivering products throughout Europe. "I know it's a lot of money," admits MD Paul Ponsonby, "but it's cheaper than the 7.5-tonners we specify." The 5-tonne Sprinter 515CDI features an aluminium body by Birmingham-based VFR. It is 3.4m long, 2.5m high and incorporates loadlocks, padded rails to protect delicate cargoes and a large near-side door.
A BAR 750kg cantilever tail-lift has been specified, along with Hatcher Components cab-top sleeper pod, a 100-litre fuel tank (standard tank is 75 litres) and full air suspension - fitted by a Dutch specialist. Driver comfort has been enhanced with air conditioning and an upgraded driver's seat. Ponsonby says that despite this high level of specification, the Sprinter still has a 2.2-tonne payload, which is 400kg more than the last 7.5-tonner he purchased.
"The new Sprinter covers 1,500 miles a week and carries the weight really well, while its size brings an additional benefit when we reach the ports," says Ponsonby. "Because it's under 6m long, we pay the minimum for commercial vehicle crossings. I am really pleased with it and don't plan to buy any more 7.5-tonners. From now on it will either be 5-tonners or 12-tonners."
