Prima Distribution has teamed up with Volvo and Finnish bodybuilder Ekeri to create a unique rigid that simplifies the firm's transport and logistics operations.

The modified Volvo FM-300 4x2 has been adapted to help Prima switch between pallet, carton and hanging-garment transport, with the aim of reducing overall operating costs.

The Crewe-based operator has a variety of customers, including Tesco, Asda, Debenhams and New Look, each with particular delivery requirements.

Ray Halford, Prima's owner and managing director, says: "Some want pallet, some want carton, some want hanging garments – so, effectively, you have to run two fleets to handle it all."

Halford suggests that by modifying some of the features used in refrigerated bodies, it is possible to meet all the requirements with one design. He adds: "You'd have a moisture-proof, insulated floor for cartons, and rigid sides for the installation of garment rails – but you could also have fully folding sides to allow for pallet loading with more security than a traditional curtainsider."
