RAC trials hybrid-power Ford Transits

The RAC is currently trialling two converted Ford Transit hybrids in the hope of achieving a 20% reduction in fuel consumption. The Hybrid+ system, supplied by Connaught Engineering and fitted to the recovery company's existing vehicles, works via a 48V Ford electric van motor operating in conjunction with the diesel engine.

The motor boosts the power using the electricity stored up from regenerative braking or engine overrunning. This enables the vehicle to operate continuously in the lower rev range, reducing consumption.

Steve Lydon, RAC quality manager, says: "There is a certain technique required to drive the hybrid vehicles to get the maximum benefits in terms of fuel savings. "The two patrols driving the vehicles are going through training to learn the new driving style, which involves having to change gear below 2,100rpm."
