Renault will replace both the Premium and Magnum with a single cab when it launches its all-new truck range in June, consigning both model names to the history books.
Heavily disguised versions of the truck, which have been on trial with selected hauliers for the past year, clearly feature an all-new cab. While it may share a few hidden components with the new FH cab, the actual structure is entirely different. One of its most striking features is a raked windscreen, with A-pillars set at 12 degrees. CM has been reliably informed that although only one cab width will be available, there will be at least four different roof heights, and at least one model will feature an entirely flat floor.
But while the Lyon-designed cabs are new and exclusive to Renault, the running gear will be shared with Volvo. Powering the heavy truck range are the DTI 11 and DTI 13 11- and 13-litre Euro-6 engines (CM 27 Sept), which are the same as Volvo's D11K and D13K in all but power ratings. The Euro-6 strategy is identical, using mild, uncooled EGR plus lots of SCR. You can expect AdBlue consumption to be about 6%. Fuel consumption will be better than the current Euro-5 range.
Renault says the new trucks have been in development for the last seven years, and 300 test vehicles have clocked-up 10 million kms and five million hours of testing. The company is confident that the new trucks will be more reliable and have improved residual values than the current range.
