The RHA is reporting widespread support for its inaugural launch of National Lorry Week, with scores of firms opening their doors between 26-31 October to encourage the British public to “Love the Lorry”.
The Scottish haulage industry is fielding 19 firms at a series of events across Scotland. The firms plan to display a wide range of vehicles and trailers, including vintage kit, in various locations, including the grounds of Falkirk and Aberdeen football clubs and at haulier Andrew Black’s depot at Drem Airfield, North Berwick.
RHA Scotland and Ireland operational manager Brian Kenny told Commercialmotor.com: “We’ve had a fantastic response from members. Companies have really invested in this.” SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT
Kings Heavy Haulage (pictured right) will trade on its celebrity status as the star of TV documentary series Supertruckers to draw the public to its Avonmouth depot. Quality manager Sarah King said: “We’re holding an open day where we will run a number of demos.

"We’ll have a Hiab lorry moving equipment around and loading it onto a truck. We’ll also have a semi low loader with its ramps down so we can drive plant and equipment on and off and we will have our Supertruckers there to meet the public and even sign autographs!
"We will also have a brand new Volvo FH parked beside our old yard shunter, which is a 1997 plate R Reg, so people can see the changes technology has brought over the years," added King.
Somerset-based Deardens Haulage and Aggregate (pictured below) has galvanised over 17 local hauliers to take part in a family fun day at Windwhistle Inn near Chard. The day will include fancy dress, apple bobbing, bouncy castles, a hog roast, craft stalls and fund raising for the Air Ambulance service alongside a broad display of vintage and modern haulage vehicles.
Deardens director Helen Dearden said: “Rather than open our yard we felt the public would get a better overview of the industry if we got all the hauliers in the area to come along and display a big cross section of vehicles.”
Family haulage firm Tom Moorhouse and Son in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, is planning to educate local MP Jason McCartney as well as holding an open day.
Owner Josie Galloway said: “We want to give him an idea of the business and explain the challenges our industry faces. We also want to show people what a great job we do and how important we are to them as an industry.”
Maritime Transport is also targeting its local MP in National Lorry Week, which is part of the RHA's Love the Lorry campaign. The company is holding an open day at its head office in Felixstowe, putting 200 “Love the Lorry” stickers on its trucks and inviting local MP Therese Coffey for lunch.
