Failure to immediately produce dangerous goods notes has led to a Romanian truck driver being fined £2,700. Ioan Tanasoaie was refused entry to the Channel Tunnel at Dover on 31 January because of the quantity of flammable goods he was carrying. He then attempted to board a ferry to Calais but only produced dangerous goods notes when requested by the police.
The driver claimed he had forgotten that the notes were in the back of his cab and only remembered when he was asked for them by the Port of Dover Police. At Folkestone Magistrates' Court today (Wednesday 4 February), Tanasoaie pleaded guilty to contravening the Merchant Shipping (Dangerous Goods & Marine Pollutants) Regulations 1997.
He was fined £2,700 with £3,104.45 costs. Maritime and Coastguard Agency hazardous cargo adviser Dave Macrae says: "Ironically, based on the dangerous goods information produced by Tanasoaie, if he had presented them to the shipping line when booking in, he would have been able to board the ferry without any problems."
