Based at Scania Dundee, Brian McGibbon has been recognised as the 2025 Scottish irtec Engineer of the Year. The accolade was announced at the Scottish Transport News Rewards awards ceremony.

McGibbon said: “To be named Scottish irtec Engineer of the Year is a proud moment for me. Throughout my career I’ve taken any opportunity to learn and develop, as I love fixing things. I’ve had some amazing experiences with some brilliant people along the way. Which is why I tell everyone, that if you get a chance to work abroad, go and do it. Go and see the world.”

McGibbon started his career as an apprentice and after joining Scania took every opportunity to continue learning and sharing his skills with others. He completed secondments in India, Sudan, Armenia, Brazil and Chile to teach technicians how to maintain Scania trucks and to experience different cultures.

Discussing his time in India, he said: “It was good fun – you would go and work during the week and then at the weekends you could enjoy the country and the culture. I’ve never seen parts so worn as in India and our job was to try to get them to buy parts, but also to fix them properly.

“The whole culture is different. We come from quite a safe environment. Out there were young boys aged 18 and 19 fixing these trucks with no PPE on, just sandals. They would dive into things, take them out and break them into bits far more than we would ever do. It’s amazing how the whole thing works out there.”

Paul Smith, Scania UK’s regional director for Scotland, said: “The team is incredibly proud of Brian. He is a real team player and talent in our business. He will happily help and teach anybody how to do something. His ability to get stuck in and solve problems and educate the next generation is priceless. He is undoubtedly a shining example of the talent we have throughout the Scania UK network.”

Gerard Nairn, branch manager at Scania Dundee, said: “Brian is an exceptional and talented technician and mentor in my workshop. Nothing phases him, and he does whatever it takes to help the team. His determination, humility, and passion are inspirational.”
