Scania has announced details of the 45 R and 45 S, its zero-tailpipe-emission regional haul trucks.

Although available to order now, these battery-powered 4x2 tractors and 6x2*4 rigids won’t go into production until Q4 2023.

They will feature 624kWh battery packs, assembled in-house at Scania. Range will be dependent on a number of factors, but a best case scenario for a 4x2 tractor with six batteries is about 350km between charges.

A new triple electric machine will provide a continuous power output level 410kW, approximately 560hp. Charging capability has been increased up to 375kW, which according to Scania means an hour-long charge will add 300km of range.

Fredrik Allard, senior vice president and head of electrification at Scania, said: “The addition of these solutions is a major step-change for customers who want to take charge.

“Scania has now reached a maturity with its electric range. With this major addition to our existing hybrids and the battery electric trucks for urban distribution we introduced in 2020, we can now offer a sustainable and multi-faceted portfolio of zero-emission solutions for our customers.”

Christian Levin, CEO of Scania, added: “This introduction represents a major milestone for us and for our partners.

“We are now increasing our range and offering new opportunities to cater for a wider selection of customers and the whole transport ecosystem. These trucks are part of the solution that the transport industry is asking for.”
