Scania's recently-launched revised R Series has beaten off competition from Volvo, MAN and Mitsubishi Fuso to become International Truck of the Year 2010.

The R Series' topped the ITOY poll thanks to its "continued evolution", which includes a more aerodynamic cab profile that not only saves fuel but also boosts airflow cooling around the engine.

Its revamped Opticruise automated gear-shifting system was also rated highly for having a faster, smoother and more intelligent shift strategy, while Scania's new onboard Driver Support System was seen as "an innovative learning tool capable of providing a continuous and pro-active assessment of a driver out on the road, rating their fuel consumption, driving efficiency and overall 'road craft' with a simple yet effective star rating system which encourages a driver to excel."

Last but not least, the jury lauded the changes made to the R Series' cab interior, which features a clever slide-out bottom bunk. ITOY jury chairman Gianenrico Griffini says: "During this extremely challenging time for Europe's commercial vehicle manufacturers, Scania has delivered a 'state-of-the-art' truck that sets new standards in terms of fuel economy, driveability and overall efficiency."

The ITOY award is presented every year by a 22-strong jury of leading European commercial vehicle journalists to the truck launched in the previous 12 months that is felt to have made the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency.

This year the voting was as follows: The Scania new R Series 114 votes; Volvo's FH16 60; MAN's TGL/TGM 46; and the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 23.
